The rocks are shaped like the head of a dragon that is about to fly off. According to an early Korean legend, a dragon that came to steal a jade ball from Mt. Halla was shot by an arrow that belonged to the god living in the mountain. The injured dragon sunk into the sea but raised its head which was locked permanently while staring into the sky.

With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a hill with grass that is connected to the Seongsan Village.
Manjang Cave is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world, and is a designated natural monument.
